Common Product Label and Sticker Sizes and How to Choose

Common label and sticker sizes by shape and industry, how to measure the labelling area on the real product, a checklist and ready-made templates, printing from 1 order.

What size should a product label be? There is no single right number for every product: label size depends on the actual area you can stick it on, how much information it has to carry and the shape of the packaging. This article covers common label and sticker sizes by product type, how to measure on the real product and ready-made templates to start from.

Why choosing the right label size matters

A label that is too large wrinkles and peels at the edges on a curved bottle. A label that is too small makes the product name hard to read and leaves no room for required information. Getting the size right from the start helps you:

  • Keep the product looking balanced, with the name and logo standing out.

  • Fit the labelling content while keeping the text readable.

  • Avoid reprinting a whole batch because the labels do not fit.

Common label and sticker sizes by shape

Each shape suits a different kind of surface. The sizes below come from templates currently on Printaz and are for reference only, not a standard:

Choosing label size by product type

Printaz serves every industry, and each industry has its own packaging. Here is how to think about it by product group:

Food, specialty goods, confectionery

Paper boxes, plastic boxes and zip bags are the usual packaging. A 50×50 mm round label suits box lids; specialty bags that need a lot of information can use a large label such as 100×140 mm, or split into a front label (name, logo) and a back label (ingredients, expiry). Drinks, coffee, tea

Cups and bottles have curved bodies, so round labels or small front labels hug them better than large rectangles. Character stickers such as the Coffee character sticker or the Smiling coffee cup sticker work well on cups and takeaway bags.

Cosmetics, gifts

Small bottles and cream jars have a narrow labelling area: keep the front label compact and put details on the outer box or a secondary label. Gift boxes have wide flat faces, so you can choose sizes more freely.

Fashion, accessories

Upright rectangular hang tags are the familiar choice, for example the Reino men's clothing hang tag, the Entity fashion hang tag and the LazyCat kids' fashion hang tag.

Grocery, retail

Grocery stores often use logo stickers on bags and boxes, such as the Time grocery store sticker, or the Traditional bún chả sticker for eateries.

How to measure label size on the real product

Even when using a ready-made size, measure on the product you actually sell:

  1. Find the flat labelling area: on bottles and jars, measure the straight part of the body, leaving out the shoulder and curved base.

  2. Measure bags when filled: an empty bag and a full bag have different faces; avoid zips and gusseted bottoms.

  3. Measure the lid: for round lid labels, measure the flat top of the lid.

  4. Leave space from the edges: labels close to the edge of a lid or base peel easily.

  5. Test print on plain paper: print at actual size, cut it out, stick it on and look from the front to check the product name is not hidden.

  6. Record the measurements for each product so you do not need to measure again next time.

Label size and labelling content

The more information a label carries, the more area it needs. For prepackaged food, the label must include required content such as the product name, the responsible business, origin, net quantity, production date and expiry date. If a small label has no room, you can split it into a front and a back label. For details on each item, see food labelling regulations. You are responsible for checking your label content against the regulations that apply to your product.

On materials: products kept cold, oily or exposed to condensation are better with plastic decal labels; see choosing label materials.

Checklist before ordering label printing

  • Measured the labelling area on the real product, not guessed from a photo.

  • Label shape suits the surface: flat, curved or lid.

  • Enough room for the required content, with readable text.

  • Printed a paper test and stuck it on.

  • Text and logo sit inside the safe zone, away from the cut line.

  • Proofread the product name and phone number, and test-scanned the QR code.

Making labels on Printaz

Printaz is an online design and printing platform that connects the whole workflow from 2D & 3D design, mockup creation and finished-product preview to print ordering, with no professional graphics software needed. For labels, you:

  1. Choose a template placed on a correctly sized die-cut in the label and sticker library.

  2. Edit text, logo and colours right on the web.

  3. View the 3D mockup to picture the label on the product. The 3D mockup helps you visualise shape and layout; actual print colours may differ from the screen.

  4. Get a quote and order printing right in the app. No MOQ, printing from just 1 order, so you can print a few to test the size first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common product label size?

No single size fits every product. In the Printaz template library, 50×50 mm round labels and stickers are the most common; clothing hang tags are usually 40×60 mm or 40×70 mm; specialty food bag labels go up to 100×140 mm. The surest way is to measure the labelling area on your own product.

Round or rectangular labels?

Round labels suit box lids, jar lids, seals and balanced logos. Rectangular labels suit box faces, bags and labels that need a lot of information such as ingredients and expiry dates.

What if a small label cannot fit all the information?

Split it into a front label for the name and logo and a back label for details, or choose a larger size. For food, check the section on small labels in the food labelling regulations article.

Can I print a few labels to test the size?

Yes. Printaz prints from just 1 order, so you can order a small batch to test before printing more.
